Gin was originally distilled in the 1600´s in Holland. Here it came into being as a medicinal drink.
It is a flavoured liquor produced from the re-distillation of a neutral spirit. Common to all gin is Juniper Berries used in their mash by distillers. Notes of Pine are often found in Juniper Berries and this helps bring out these traditional notes.
Flavourings
Other flavourings can be added to give a distinctive and unique taste. Flavouring can be spices or botanical. For example lavender, citrus peel, lemongrass, cucumber, rose and black pepper.
Whilst Vodka is generally tasteless and neutral Gin has a distinctive herbal taste. Gin is distilled with Juniper Berries and botanicals as already described whilst Vodka is water-based.
Over the years people experimented and now we have a multitude of Craft Gin Cocktails.
